Major Visa & Residency Changes (2026)
Significant Fee Increases: Starting in fiscal year 2026, the Japanese government plans to raise visa-related fees. While exact figures are being finalized, proposed changes could see visa renewals and status changes jump from ¥6,000 to as much as ¥40,000–¥100,000.
New "Special Residence Card": Beginning in June 2026, Japan will roll out an integrated card that combines your Residence Card and My Number Card functions into one.
Mandatory Integration Programs: The government is considering mandatory Japanese language training and cultural awareness courses for foreign residents applying for or renewing long-term visas.
Part-Time Work & Post-Graduation Rules
Part-Time Work Limits: Students are generally allowed to work up to 28 hours per week during classes and up to 40 hours per week during long academic breaks (summer, winter, spring). You must have a valid "Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted" before starting any job.
Prohibited Industries: Even with a permit, students are strictly forbidden from working in adult entertainment businesses, including many bars, clubs, and mahjong parlors, even as a cleaner or dishwasher.
Transitioning to Work: If you graduate in 2026 and have a job offer, you must submit your visa change application by January 31, 2026, to begin working by April 1. Note that your part-time work permit becomes invalid the moment your status changes to a work visa.
Health & Financial Compliance
National Health Insurance (NHI): All students staying over three months must enroll in NHI. It covers 70% of medical costs, leaving you to pay 30%.
Strict Penalty for Unpaid Bills: Immigration screening is tightening; having unpaid taxes, health insurance premiums, or medical bills (specifically over ¥10,000) can lead to visa renewal denials or even revocation of permanent residency.
Income Reporting: You must report your part-time income to your local municipal office annually. Even if you have zero income, reporting it allows you to qualify for significant reductions in health insurance premiums.
